Power of Open Source and Android – Run Android Apps on iOS

I came across this post on engadget that really illustrates the potential of FOSS. It opens up a world of infinite possibilities. This is one of the main reasons for which I love Android more than iOS or Windows Phone. In the two latter cases, you cannot go beyond a certain limit due to the ‘closed source’ ness of these mobile operating systems. Even though Android too isn’t completely open sourced, it still beats the latter operating systems. The things you can do with an Android device are infinite.

This link shows how Android apps are being run on an iPad.

Connecting Galaxy Tab in USB mode

Samsung Galaxy Tab

I was developing some stuff for my Samsung Galaxy Tab using the Android SDK and Eclipse. Just follow the simple steps below to get your device detected by Android SDK.

  • First, go to the Samsung site and download Samsung Kies. Install it and then plug in your device.
  • Run Kies. It should now automatically detect your tab and display it’s contents. If it does so, then it means that the USB Drivers for your device is installed by Kies.
  • In order to run the application successfully on the device, the tab should be first set to Debugging Mode. This can be done by simply going to Settings>Application>Development>USB Debugging. Make sure debugging is turned on.
  • After you have created your application, Run it and it should show you an option of connecting either with the live device or with the emulator. Choose your tab from that screen and voila ! The apk file installs on your device and runs it !

Developers can now upload multiple APK’s to Android Market

The new feature now allows an app developer to upload several APK files–each one intended for a specific target device or set of devices–to only one product listing. Prior to the new feature for multiple APK uploads, app developers were allowed to upload only one APK file for every product listing. That has resulted in multiple listings of a single product, with each listing targeting a specific platform version, screen size, or chipset.

With this new feature, developers can now upload multiple apk files for their app into a single listing, with the different apk versions intended for different customers. For example, if u want your app to work properly on both Honeycomb and previous versions, you need not have several listings of the same app in the app store. You can simply place the apks under the same product listing, and the Android Market will choose the right apk to push to the user based on the the characteristics of the user’s device.

An awesome feature indeed !!! Way to go Google !! 🙂

What makes Angry Birds so addictive ???

Angry Birds

Well first of all, I don’t think i need to explain what “Angry Birds” is all about. It’s everywhere; games on various platforms, smartphone cases, tshirts, bagpacks, stuffed toys, movies, ads,…..phew !!!

Angry Birds, the two-year old gaming app from developer Rovio, has been downloaded more than 300 million times to date and is on track to reaching its one billion downloads, according to Rovio CEO Peter Vesterback. The franchise has turned Rovio into a reported $1 billion company (on par with JetBlue).

Starting out as a free, ads-free iPhone app in 2009, Angry Birds has expanded to free and paid versions for Android, Windows Phone 7, Symbian, Maemo, PC/Mac, Sony PS3/PSP, and Roku hardware. There are also for it’s launch on various Nintendo consoles, Microsoft Xbox, and BlackBerry PlayBook.

In a survey conducted, it was revealed that gamers play angry birds nearly 200 million minutes per day. That in turn is equivalent to each hour played each day for 16 years !!!!!!!!!!!!

Also a survey conducted by AYTM.com of 1000 gamers who have played Angry Birds 25+ times revealed that around 23% of the people found it very relaxing to play the game.

Well i guess this means that any console that comes out in the future, that does not have an angry bird app for it, isn’t going to be hanging around in the market for long 😛

Here’s a really fun trailer i like of the Angry Birds Series :
